“I am forced to conclude that God made Texas on his day off, for pure entertainment, just to prove that all that diversity could be crammed into one section of earth by a really top hand.” – Author Mary Lasswell
Yes, Texas is a big and very diverse state. One could spend a lifetime exploring the riches it has to offer and perhaps someday I’ll get to it all. For now though, I’m content to be overwhelmed by the natural beauty the Central Texas region has to offer. With the Hill Country to the west and rich farm land to the east, there’s no shortage of photographic opportunities for those who love the natural landscape and the occasional old barn or farmhouse.
My name is Andy Heatwole and I’m fortunate to live in the Texas Hill Country which is a never-ending source of inspiration and photographic opportunities. The natural beauty of this area is something I’ve been exploring and photographing for over ten years. The best discoveries are those that are found when you put away the map, pick a direction, and just drive.
I was first inspired to take up the photographic arts in the late 1990’s when I saw what photographers like Stu Jenks were doing with night photography. From fire spirals to light painting, I was hooked. It didn’t take long to become obsessed with other photographic endeavors and I soon fell in love with nature and landscapes.
Another subject I developed a passion for along the way was the old barns and houses that are so prevalent in this area. While much of my work captures the overt glory of Nature at her finest, the subtle yet rich beauty of forgotten places is like a constant siren call to which I’m drawn. From abandoned farm houses to the rust-soaked gears of old machinery, the exquisite melancholy these types of images invoke binds us to an unknown past and the secrets it holds. Like the memories they contain, these forgotten places are slowly crumbling into dust and will one day be gone forever.
This is your opportunity to visit forgotten places that aren’t on any map. Places that must be sought after with an adventurous spirit and a bit of luck. To chance upon the perfect scene bristling with light and beauty can make any amount of searching worth the effort. It’s also an opportunity to experience the peaceful wonder that’s so abundant in this area. Places where the stresses and problems of daily life start to dissolve and then disappear completely.
This is Local Texas. Not just a state – but a state of mind, beauty, and adventure.
